The Whitehorse indoor soccer scene is about to get very busy.

The soccer season will soon be underway with action featuring Whitehorse Minor Soccer age groups, recreational and competitive co-ed leagues, and oldtimers.

The Whitehorse Rapids Over-35 indoor soccer season will begin this Saturday with three games at the Canada Games Centre, beginning at 9 a.m.

The six-team competitive league's season runs from mid-October to April.

A draft was completed last night to determine the make-up of each 11-player squad.

"The skill level is actually really good,鈥 said league board member Grant Zazula.

"There's some real quality players in the league.鈥

The oldtimer men's league features players ranging in age from 35 to early-40s.

Each team plays every Saturday morning.

"It's a good Saturday morning to look forward to,鈥 Zazula said. "It keeps people out of the bar on Friday nights.鈥

The league has sent an all-麻豆社区team to participate in open invitational indoor soccer tournaments outside of the territory in past years.

Zazula said the league has their eye on a tournament in Prince George, B.C. in March.

The Whitehorse Competitive Co-ed Indoor Soccer League will get underway on Monday night with all four teams seeing action between 8 and 10 p.m.

The competitive co-ed league features four teams of 12 players, equally mixed between male and female athletes.

The regular season runs until February, and the teams compete for the league crown in March. Matches are formal and feature referees.

"(The league) is meant to have experienced players who want a competitive game,鈥 said league organizer Geoff Woodhouse. "It's not meant to teach people the game. You just have to enjoy playing a competitive game.鈥

The league was started two years ago to offer competitive female players a higher level to play.

"There really hasn't been a venue for women to play competitively in the territory,鈥 Woodhouse explained. "Right from the first year, within two weeks of the news getting out, we had four teams.鈥

Despite interest from potential players, the league remains at four teams.

"Right now, we're in a very comfortable place,鈥 Woodhouse said.

The co-ed league is aiming to send an all-麻豆社区team to a tournament in Las Vegas next month.
