It's a big weekend for women's hockey in Whitehorse.

The fourth annual Whitehorse Women's Chrismukahanza Hockey Jamboree will take place at Takhini Arena on Friday and Saturday.

Four teams will battle for the jamboree trophy. This year, team names have taken on a superhero theme 鈥 Atomic Betties, Black Widows, Vixens, and Wonder Women.

"I think it's our chance to showcase the league and to have some tough competition while still just having fun,鈥 said Joelle Hodgins, vice president of the Whitehorse Women's Hockey Association.

Games will get underway tomorrow at 5:30 p.m., with action continuing until the championship game, slated for Saturday at 5 p.m.

A unique skills competition 鈥 including six challenges such as stickhandling with a tennis ball, and throwing gear on a hockey equipment drying tree 鈥 will be held Saturday from 11:15 to 12:15.

"You know, completely normal hockey-related skills,鈥 Hodgins quipped.

A banquet will follow the jamboree, which is the only tournament the association organizes that is unrelated to rec league play.

Awards include MVP, Most Sportsmanlike Players, Top Goalie, and youngest and oldest player prizes.

The jamboree allows friends competing against each other on a regular basis in league play the opportunity to suit up together.

"Teams are meant to be random based on skill, but we usually work with requests to play with friends,鈥 said Hodgins.

"The biggest thing though is to allow other women the opportunity to test out the idea of joining the league in the future.鈥

Five players from Dawson City have registered, and the association has advertised in the communities, as well as northern B.C. and Alaska.

Interested players have until 5 p.m. today to sign up at Sport Yukon. Cost is $85 for the weekend, which includes five ice times and a ticket to the post-jamboree banquet.

Two goalies from the Female Mustangs will play in the jamboree, as the association continues to seek more netminders to play regular season games.

The league owns two sets of goalie equipment and is willing to lend them out to any interested players.

Jill Pollack and Co. and Goldsmiths are the jamboree's major sponsors.
