Whitehorse's Arctic Edge Skaters had a crazy weekend full of tests and competition, while trying to qualify for the Arctic Winter Games.
While the competition went on in Whitehorse, Kevin Caron was in Mississauga, Ont. where he qualified for the Junior Canadian Championships, to be skated in London, Ont. in January.
"This is a fantastic achievement,鈥 said Cheryl Van Blaricom, publicist for the Arctic Edge Skating Club.
Caron finished 17th overall in the junior men's event at the BMO Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge.
As for the action at home, more than 80 skaters competed in skills tests, the Yukon Gold Nugget Championships and the Arctic Winter Games trials.
"It was a jam-packed weekend for Arctic Edge Skating Club skaters this weekend both at home and away,鈥 said Van Blaricom.
The skaters performed for visiting judges Hilary Quick, Robert Mandley and Amie Garas.
"Friday night, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning judges evaluated skater performances against defined testing standards,鈥 said Van Blaricom.
The skaters were put through 39 tests in all categories of skating, including freeskate, interpretive, skills and dance.
"The highlights included two skaters who achieved their gold level in skills,鈥 Van Blaricom said.
Teneil Caron, who skated beautifully Saturday afternoon achieved her silver level skills in the senior category and her Gold Level Skills on Sunday, and teammate Rachel Pettitt achieved her Gold Level Skills on Sunday.
The weekend saw four skaters qualify for the Arctic Winter Games. Kelcy Armstrong, Maya Austin, Bryn Hoffman and Teniel Caron will represent the Yukon in Grande Prairie in March. They will be joined by coaches Lori Austin and Michelle Gorczyca.
The Yukon Gold Nugget Championships were held along with the skills tests, and saw 23 skaters participate in 16 different events.
Van Blaricom said that sisters Alyssa and Abigail Cuenza did well at the competition.
"These young skaters both demonstrated tremendous poise and promise of great things to come,鈥 said Van Blaricom.
Another standout of the weekend was Armstrong, who swept the weekend winning preliminary elements, preliminary creative, Junior Bronze FreeSkate and pre-introductory interpretive events.
Rachel Pettitt won two gold medals in the junior bronze creative and the bronze interpretive events.
The skaters will participate in a clinic Dec. 18 with visiting coaches Eileen and
Keegan Murphy.
