The Atom Jr. Mustangs have a rare opportunity to open their season tournament schedule in front of the hometown crowd this weekend.

The young club is welcoming two out-of-town teams to Whitehorse for the Whitehorse International Atom Hockey Tournament, taking place Nov. 8 to 10 at Takhini Arena.

Action begins today at 4:30 p.m. and will finish Sunday with the gold medal game scheduled for 2:15 p.m.

The Atom Mustangs will square off with two new rivals 鈥 the Fort Nelson Fury and the Mat-Su Eagles from Wasilla, Alaska.

"This is the first tournament these kids are playing together as a team,鈥 tournament convener Ron Cruikshank explained. "It's nice to do that at home. Almost always, it takes place away. To play tournaments here in Whitehorse is a pretty rare event, so it's pretty nice to have this thing happen.鈥

Hockey fans of all ages are encouraged to take in some of the action this weekend. Off the ice, entertainment will include raffles, 50/50 draws and plenty of prizes.

On the ice, the Mustangs will have a chance to test their skills against other rep hockey programs.

"It's always good to get an idea of how good your rep team is relative to teams elsewhere,鈥 Cruikshank said. "When you play other places, you get a sense of the hockey programs there. It will be a real eye-opener for them.鈥
