The Whitehorse Bantam A Mustangs dominated the round robin, and finished with three straight shutouts en route to winning the Winfield Bantam Rep Invitational Tournament in B.C. last weekend.
"We don't see three shutouts in a row very often,鈥 head coach Barry Blisner admitted to the Star yesterday. "Both Josh (Tetlichi) and Devon (Troke) were on their game. It was a pretty good measuring stick. Going to a Tier 3 tournament and doing so well only bodes well for provincials at the end of the year.鈥
The Mustangs scored 27 goals and went 6-0 in the Okanagan Valley, bouncing back from a Tier 2 tournament last month in Olds, Alta., where they finished 1-3.
A second-period goal from Nick Dobush and Tetlichi's second straight shutout secured the championship win Sunday, as the Mustangs beat Nelson, B.C., 1-0 in a rematch of their first round-robin game.
"I was very proud of them,鈥 Blisner said of his players. "Coming from Olds, where I thought we played well but only had one win, the kids were a little down. Winning 1-0 does a lot for their confidence.鈥
Tetlichi picked up MVP honours in the final for his shutout.
"That was probably our weakest game,鈥 Blisner said of the final. "We were tired and came out flat in what was a very fast-paced game.鈥
The Mustangs opened the tournament with two games Friday. Whitehorse busted out of the gate, beating Nelson 6-3.
Nick Dobush scored a hat trick, and Kaine Comin, Sam Logan and Levi Johnson added singles as the Mustangs' offence got hot early.
"We came out flying,鈥 said Blisner. "None of our three round-robin games were ever in doubt.鈥
At times, the Mustangs were applying offensive pressure for two to three minutes at a time, Blisner added.
The Mustangs faced a North Vancouver club in their second game, defeating them soundly 7-3.
Chance Goodman and Spencer Lessard each netted a pair of goals, while both Dobush and Logan added another. Gavin Lawrie scored once and added two assists in the snipe show.
Riley Smoler chipped in two assists, while defenceman Jack Blisner had three.
On Saturday, Whitehorse squared off with Arbutus, a private Vancouver-based club, beating them 7-0 to finish the round robin tournament 3-0.
This time, Goodman and Johnson each scored twice, while Blisner, Ryan Macdonald and Mathew Braga each added one.
Goaltender Tetlichi picked up an assist and a shutout in his second start.
The Mustangs went on to face the host team from Winfield in the semi-finals Sunday morning, thumping them 6-0 in a rough, physical game.
While Devon Troke picked up a shutout between the pipes, Goodman scored another pair of goals to lead the offence. Blisner and Johnson also tallied, while Caleb Marsh rounded out the scoring with a goal and two assists.
Late in the game, Johnson was charged with a major penalty for checking from behind, which caused him to miss the final. Versatile defenceman Jarrett Peterson moved up to take his spot.
In lieu of his regular assistant coaches, Blisner was aided by some "good work鈥 by Wade Comin behind the bench for the tournament.
