One of the highlights of the year for local cross-country skiers is on the calendar for this Saturday.
The annual ski swap will take place at the Mount McIntyre Rec Centre and bargain hunters will be up early to get in line for the 9 a.m. opening.
There are a few changes to the day's events that are meant to make the early hours a more enjoyable experience.
Beginning at 8 a.m., the Whitehorse Curling Club will be offering up a breakfast service and coffee, while the Winter Fair will open at 8:30 to give swappers a preview of what is to come for the winter months.
Also new this year is the partnership with Mount Sima in providing a full weekend of slopes and trails information, deals and program registration.
The Winter Fair will continue through Sunday at Mount Sima from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The fair will provide information for alpine, snowboard, Nordic and AT at both venues over the weekend. There will be dealers, clubs, and local businesses on hand to answer questions and show off the latest in equipment.
The ski swap remains the main attraction, however, with doors opening from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
All kinds of winter sports gear will be for sale, including cross-country skis, downhill skis, hockey, snowboards, snow bikes, hockey and winter camping gear.
The key to a great swap is having a lot of good equipment to sell and Whitehorse residents are encouraged to check closets, attics, garages and basements for winter gear that can be re-used. Equipment can be brought to Mount McIntyre today and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Anything valued at $5 or more can be sold at the swap. There is a $1 charge for each item and the ski club keeps 20 per cent of the sale price. The club also collects GST, included in their 20 per cent.
