The two best teams in the local women's hockey league are set for a playoff showdown.

After both won their first playoff games, the first-place Red Dragons and second-place Green Beasts will face off next Tuesday in what may be the most important matchup of the season before the championship game.

The losing squad will face a more difficult road to the championship game in the double elimination playoff round, and will need to win a Wednesday night matchup to earn a berth in the final next Thursday.

The team that wins Tuesday's game will advance directly to the final.

Last night, the Beasts shut out playoff upstart Whitesnake 6-0 at the Canada Games Centre.

Hannah Woodwalker led the way offensively with two goals and an assist, while goalie Amy Gill picked up the shutout.

Joelle Hodgins and Laura Grieve each finished with a goal and two assists, while Chris Kirk had a goal and a helper.

Katherine MacKellar's goal opened the scoring early in the first period.

On Tuesday night, the Dragons dominated Blue Rodeo 6-1.

Danielle Hodgson, the league's top scorer, netted a hat trick and one assist to once again lead the way offensively.

Krystal McKenna, Taryn Parker and Cody Claggett added goals in the win.

Stacey Bowden was solid inbetween the pipes, and also picked up an assist.

Lynsey Keaton had the lone goal for Blue Rodeo.

Blue Rodeo did beat the Gold Diggers 2-1 last night to keep their playoff dreams alive, however.

Steph Hedley scored a pair of goals to lead the way, while Haley Tomlin replied with a single marker for the Gold Diggers – the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs.

Blue Rodeo now awaits the winner of a Black Ice-Whitesnake matchup on Sunday.

The loser of that game will be the second team eliminated from the playoffs, while the winner will face Blue Rodeo on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

The winner of that game will play immediately following their win against the loser of the Dragons, Beasts matchup.

The Dragons finished the regular season with a top record of 29-5-2, while the Beasts were second overall at 18-13-5.
