DELIGHTING THE CROWD – Tyke players hit the ice after the first period Saturday.
The latest chapter in the Whitehorse Huskies’ storied history got off to a roaring start Friday night.
The latest chapter in the Whitehorse Huskies’ storied history got off to a roaring start Friday night.
Evan Campbell struck quickly, burying a wrist shot high blocker less than two minutes into the game.
The goal got the offensive juggernaut rolling, and Campbell would add three more in the contest as the Huskies coasted to a 9-5 win over the visiting Fort Nelson Yeti at Takhini Arena.
The line of Campbell, Adam Henderson and Kane Dawe was dangerous all night long.
Henderson scored twice and added three assists in the contest, while Dawe picked up four assists.
“First things first, I can’t say enough about my linemates,” Campbell told the Star post-game. “I can’t do it without them. They fed me in the slot – perfect passes every time. I’m not going to say it was easy, but they definitely made it easier for me.”
The 24-year-old left-winger led the Huskies with seven goals in the two-game series.
Other scores included Rob Wells and Rob Warner (2), although Warner’s first goal was officially credited to linemate Derek Klassen.
Scoring for the Yeti Friday were Josh Bostock, Barney Streeper, Kevin Radford, Mike Fiddler and Mike Lalonde.
Donning the Huskies jersey in front of a revved-up crowd in their home barn was special, Campbell said.
“We’re really lucky to have this chance,” he said, referring to him and many of his teammates who spent the lion’s share of their junior and university hockey careers playing away from home.
“We didn’t expect to get this opportunity to play in front of a home crowd again. After junior, I thought it was over, so it was a cool experience.”
Campbell was named Huskies player of the game Friday, while Bostock picked up the same honour for the visitors.
Both games started with official opening ceremonies including the singing of the national anthem.
Other entertainment saw tyke hockey teams hit the ice alongside various Huskies players following the first period.
The 50/50 draws paid out more than $2,000 Friday, and $2,500 Saturday.
