Canoe, kayak season ends with Autumn Classic
Another season on the river has come to a close.
Another season on the river has come to a close.
The Yukon Canoe and Kayak Club's calendar year ended with the annual Autumn Classic, held Sunday Sept. 29 on the M'Clintock River.
"The M'Clintock race is always a lot of fun,鈥 Coates said. " (But) we only had three boats show up, so it wasn't much of an event.鈥
Kayaker Alison Morham finished with the 11-km event's top time 鈥 1:14:16.
The other contestants paddled tandem canoes. Pam and Jim Boyde finished in 1:18:25, while Coates and Pat McKenna completed the race in 1:24:25.
Paddlers made their way approximately six kilometers upstream before grabbing tokens from a marked tree and returning back downstream. This year's tokens were plastic beetles and lady bugs.
The river had dropped slightly with the warm weather the territory experienced during the lead-up to the Autumn Classic, and conditions for the race were reasonable with temperatures hovering around six degrees Celsius.
While this year's event had only minimal participation, organizer Peter Coates said the club enjoyed a "reasonably good season.鈥
"The season started well. We had a lot of boats in the first race,鈥 said Coates of the 2012 season.
"We did lose a couple of good kayakers who left Whitehorse, but we still had some new blood coming in. So that's all good. It's about what we'd expect.鈥
