The Canadian-Filipino Sports Association Of Yukon (CFSAY) held their opening ceremonies Saturday evening at Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Whitehorse. A band played, and several dignitaries were in attendance, including Yukon MLA Yvonne Clarke, Whitehorse Couns. Jocelyn Curteanu and Ted Laking, and Yukon Party leader Currie Dixon.

They were followed by exhibition volleyball games, a regular season basketball game and an exhibition basketball game. The Star caught up with CFSAY President Aldrin Manalad last Saturday evening between the opening ceremonies and the volleyball and basketball games.

鈥淭onight is all about our 4th season for the Canadian-Filipino Sports Association Of Yukon Winter Sports Tournament. We do this every year, except last year because of the pandemic,鈥 related Manalad.

This would have been the 5th season for the CFSAY, if not for the pandemic.

鈥淐FSAY is the only association that offers basketball, volleyball, badminton, chess, and table tennis. So five sports events, all happening every Saturday and Sunday, here at Vanier gym, from 5 o鈥檆lock to 7 o鈥檆lock every Saturday and Sunday.鈥

鈥淭onight we will be having our regular basketball games, but the important thing is we will have an exhibition game, women鈥檚 basketball 鈥 they have one team 鈥 going up against our own basketball team of boys. That will be happening second game.

鈥淎nd then for volleyball, we will be having our regular ... tournament which will be happening in the small gym.鈥

The volleyball tournament was a season-opener.

Manalad says it means a lot to the community to have these games.

鈥淲e are very proud and honoured because I think at the moment we have at least 215 members and they鈥檙e not all Filipinos, but they are also Canadians. But we also have East Indians ... Chinese ... so this is not only a Filipino association, but this is an open tournament and an open season for everybody living here in Whitehorse, Yukon.鈥

This was CFSAY鈥檚 last weekend before their Christmas break. The association will resume play on Jan. 8 and will go until May.
