The most anticipated soccer tournament of the year ended in thrilling fashion鈥圫unday night.

The Multiple Scoregasms edged defending champion Team Lars 4-3 in overtime Sunday, capping the annual three-day Christmas soccer tournament in style.

Scoregasms player Robin Smith buried the winner late in the second five-minute overtime period, sniping one over the left shoulder of Team Lars鈥 goalie Stu Paton. Smith鈥檚 goal earned his team an $800 cash prize.

Kurtis Hills, Dillon Vickerman and Rob Borud scored for the Scoregasms in regular time.

Team Lars鈥 sniper Nick Locke had a pair of goals in the loss, while Patrik Zuccarini added a single.

An estimated crowd of 200 took in the contest at Vanier Catholic Secondary School, which followed the women鈥檚 final won by Charly鈥檚 Angels 6-4.

鈥淭his is huge,鈥 said Hills of the hard-fought championship. 鈥淚t鈥檚 my first time winning and it feels great.鈥

Other members of the Scoregasms were Caleb Kelly, Dominic Korn, Jesse Latoski, Travis Olynyk, Jono Runions and Robin Stacey.

The game had its rough moments with players from both teams receiving repeated warnings from the referee.

Ultimately, Team Lars was outhustled by the speedier Scoregasms.

鈥淭hey were a little bit younger and really skilled,鈥 said Locke. 鈥淲e were really experienced but you always need a little luck to win.鈥

While they failed to make the final, two Missle Toes players picked up major awards, with Sam Lindsey being named top forward with eight goals and Boris Hoefs snagging MVP honours. Michael Hare of the 鈥91 Grizzlies was named top male goalie.

Meanwhile, the women鈥檚 championship was a rematch of last year鈥檚 final between Charly鈥檚 Angels and the Golden Oldies.

Angels鈥 麻豆社区Camille Galloway scored a hat trick, Megan Lanigan sniped a pair and Jaylene Kelly also struck to lead the defending champions to a 6-4 win.

Emily Fedoriak, Susan Whitty, Laura Whitty and Sam Wintemute responded for the Oldies.

With the Angels 鈥 named after coach Charly Kelly 鈥 leading 5-4 late, the Oldies surged in an attempt to tie it, but couldn鈥檛 beat goalie Anna Janowicz. Galloway鈥檚 bullet from the right side past Oldies goalie Emily Hoefs sealed the game.

鈥淭his is the highlight of our Christmas,鈥濃圠anigan told the Star. 鈥淎 lot of us come back for the holidays and it鈥檚 always a good time out there.

鈥淎s a group, we鈥檙e super competitive and it can get pretty intense.鈥

Other members of the championship team included Lara Herry-Saint Onge, Jamie Joe-Hudson, Rachel Kinvig, Aimee Parker and Cheyenne Ryan.

Galloway was named the tournament鈥檚 top forward with 10 goals, while Parker was named MVP.

Alongside the tournament victory, the Angels pocketed $425.

Emily Hoefs was named goalie of the tournament.

鈥淭he Hoefs family lives for this tournament,鈥 she smiled post-game.

鈥淭his tournament鈥檚 unique in that you know everybody and there鈥檚 a lot of old grudges. We usually lose in the final because we鈥檙e old and tired.鈥

The annual tournament hosted by the local Senior Metro League is a highlight for players.

鈥淲e look forward to it every year,鈥 said co-organizer Haley Stallabrass. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 play competitively all year, and this event is definitely fun and competitive.鈥

Last year, her father, Ian Stallabrass, built sideboards for the tournament, separating the fans from the gameplay. The boards, which now feature doors, were built with material donated by Home Hardware.
