Members of the Yukon youth indoor climbing team will participate in a Peel Climb-A-Thon this weekend.
The youths will climb a 22-foot rock wall inside the home of local firefighter Mike Martin, who is opening his home for the fund-raising event.
The team is aiming to raise money for the Peel trial, set to occur in July.
"I have three kids of my own and I know how important the Peel is to them on so many levels,鈥濃圡artin said in a press release. "I鈥坱hink it's really empowering for these kids to be able to do something to take part in this issue.鈥
Henry Bearisto, one of a dozen youth participating in the 12-hour event, said the pristine wilderness of the Peel watershed is rare, and needs to be saved for future generations.
"Without lands like the Peel, we would lose a way of life here in the Yukon,鈥 he said.
Alain Dallaire, the club's volunteer coach, said his athletes wanted to send a message to the territory that youth recognize the importance of democratic decision-making.
"They wanted to do something to help with this cause, and I think this event is a great way for them to express their beliefs and also help contribute to something that they feel is important for them as the next generation in the Yukon.鈥
The event is open to spectators and sponsors. It will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at 1307 Elm Street in Porter Creek.
