The Whitehorse Co-ed Slo-pitch League wrapped up last Sunday with the season-ending tourney at the Pepsi Centre in Whitehorse.

In the Division 2 final, the Jim Shockey鈥檚 Predators feasted on the Yukon Yardworks Diggers 18-5.

The Predators鈥 Creed Swan said they took the long way around to the championship.

鈥淲e had a great season 鈥 I think we only lost one game all season 鈥 and we dropped the game to them (Saturday), so we had to take the back way to get back into the finals.

鈥淎nd we lost the coin flip, so we were visitors, so that means we had to get up on them early, which we did.

鈥淔irst two innings, we scored the runs we needed. Bats kind of got quiet there during the middle of the game but our fielding 鈥 we just didn鈥檛 make a lot of mistakes.鈥

Swan said experience was the key to their victory.

鈥淥ur crew鈥檚 been together for a long time and we don鈥檛 make too many errors. When we do, it doesn鈥檛 cost us too many runs. Then we鈥檝e got a few big bats in our lineup, so we can always get runs.鈥

Sean (Happy) Munro of the Diggers said, 鈥淚t was a great game. It was a great season. We were fortunate enough to beat the (Predators) in overtime (one extra inning, on Saturday).

鈥淎s we shook hands, they figured we鈥檇 see them again in the finals. We did. And they had the better sticks today. Played a great game.

鈥淲e had a few simple errors, which was unfortunate to see, but we bonded, the team bonded. We had a great time. At the end of the day, it鈥檚 recreation league, and we had a great season.

鈥淚 think the difference today is we just got inside of our heads a little too much when we had a few errors in the first two innings and I think we had a hard time recovering from that,鈥 Munro said.

Diggers coach Brhy Romat added, 鈥淲e started off cold. Not much we could do. Tried fighting back, got some energy, got some sticks, then just kind of lost it at the end.

鈥淕reat group of guys to play with, and I鈥檇 be happy to play with them again next year,鈥 he added. 鈥淚t鈥檚 unfortunate, but not bad for a first-year team. I鈥檒l take it.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a tough loss. A tough pill to swallow, but it happens.鈥

Having said that, Romat thought it was an 鈥渁wesome weekend. Great weather for it, and George (Arcand) has done a great job for his last weekend in town.鈥

Meanwhile, in the Division 3 final, Twin Peaks tamed the Bearcats 25-11 and Booster Juice won a close one over Yukon Brewing 19-14 in Division 4.

Speaking of Arcand, as usual, the last word goes to him.

鈥淚t was a great weekend, a good final tournament, and couldn鈥檛 ask for better weather, teams have been great, so, really good.鈥

Arcand said that with this being his last tourney, he was feeling 鈥渁 little nostalgic.

鈥(I鈥檝e) been having a few conversations here with different people, but ya know what?鈥圷ou come to grips with the inevitability, and it was my decision, so, I鈥檓 good.

鈥淭his last season has been awesome in the sense that every event we鈥檝e run has been in the sunshine. We鈥檝e been blessed with weather this summer. It鈥檚 been great.

鈥淏ut our big tournaments and this one, all in sunshine, so can鈥檛 ask for more.鈥

Arcand added he鈥檚 happy.

鈥淚 wish the best to the oncoming folks, and I鈥檓 around if they鈥檝e got questions and I hope all my friends in softball have a great time in the future.鈥
