Whitehorse鈥檚 Complete Concrete failed to defend their Dustball Co-Ed Division A title Sunday.
The team, which won its Division I co-ed opening tournament in May, just couldn鈥檛 find the momentum it needed against Juneau鈥檚 McGivney鈥檚 Bar & Grill.
鈥淚t happens. Sometimes you can come to a game and everyone is hitting and everyone is fielding and everyone is doing everything and sometimes it just doesn鈥檛 happen,鈥 said Brett Green, Complete Concrete team captain.
The Whitehorse team had a good weekend, but lost to McGivney鈥檚 earlier in the tournament.
鈥淲e knew what we were getting into when we were meeting them again and we were just flat this morning is all,鈥 he said after the game.
Dominic Branson, of McGivney鈥檚, was pleased with his team鈥檚 win over what he called, 鈥渢he best team here.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 good competition and good fun,鈥 he said.
McGivney鈥檚 played a solid game throughout and ended play on a tight double out, at second and first to finish the final 15-6.
Branson credits his team鈥檚 strong showing to the women on his team, who also suited up to play a double header with their women鈥檚 team, Killer Bees, on the same diamond right away.
鈥淥ur ladies are really what makes the difference on this team. They鈥檙e really good players,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou have to have good women. They carried us.鈥
The Killer Bees would drop their women鈥檚 game to the Yukon Titans.
With a low scoring game, Green said it just wasn鈥檛 his team鈥檚 game at bat.
鈥淚 think for the most part our defence was there, we just couldn鈥檛 get a rally going on the sticks at all today. It happens I鈥坓uess,鈥 he said after the game.
Play for Complete Concrete continues this week as playoffs begin for Whitehorse鈥檚 co-ed teams.
Seventy-one teams competed in this year鈥檚 Dustball. There were 39 co-ed teams, 14 women鈥檚 teams and 18 men鈥檚 teams.
Three teams from Inuvik and three teams from Carmacks attended, along with a smattering of teams from Alaska.
The Vic City Mercenaries, of Victoria, also played in their first Dustball ever, finishing second in the co-ed B division.
Whitehorse Dental Donkeys rounded out the co-ed A division in third place.
Thibodeau鈥檚 Valley鈥圠iqueur was first in the B division with Vic City Mercenaries in second and Wounded Deere in third.
In the co-ed C division, Inuvik鈥檚 Aklak Air Falcons took the win with Carmacks Nighthawks in second and Philmar RV in third.
The co-ed D division was won by the Predators. KDFN was second and HUB was third.
The P&M Recycling Guns defended their Dustball men鈥檚 A division title Sunday against the Alaska Fudge Co.
Its their eighth win in the past 11 years.
The Guns got on the board early and a skeleton crew Alaska Fudge Co. didn鈥檛 have the power to match.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e a hellacious team,鈥 said Mark Sebens, Alaska Fudge Co. team captain. 鈥淭hey just hit the ball really well.鈥
It was a special game for Sebens, who said this is about his 20th year at Dustball. His son Fletcher, who was born at the Whitehorse General Hospital, played alongside him.
Despite the loss, Sebens was all smiles after the game.
鈥淚t鈥檚 kinda fun to be here playing against these guys,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey shut us down from hitting and it matters who puts up the most points on the scoreboard, simple as that.鈥
Whitehorse鈥檚 Dave鈥檚 Cleaning Crew rounded out third in the men鈥檚 A division. The Brewers won the B division, followed by Juneau鈥檚 Thibodeau鈥檚 Kenny鈥檚 Liquor and the Urban Realty Reds.
In the men鈥檚 C division, Big Bear Donair took the win. Carmacks鈥 CRB Pop-Ups was second and Tetra Tech was third.
See Tuesday鈥檚 newspaper for coverage of the women鈥檚 A division final.
