The annual Curl for Kids' Sake, benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters Yukon, will go this Sunday at the Whitehorse Curling Club.
Twenty teams are registered, but there is still room for two more, the charity's executive director Harold Sher said yesterday.
"If anyone wants to join in, they can come and play for a donation,鈥 he said. "People love this event when they get there and do it. The worse you are, the more fun you have. Nobody counts the score.鈥
Interested parties should call the Big Brothers Big Sisters office at 668-7911 and leave a message before noon tomorrow.
Funds are raised through sponsorship, pledges, 50/50 draws and a silent auction.
"The public is welcome to come in and bid on these items,鈥 Sher explained of the auction. "It's not restricted just to members of the curling event.鈥
More than $9,000 was raised through the curling event last year.
The event will begin with an instructional period for new curlers at 9:40 a.m. followed by coffee. Games are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., with the last one going at 2 p.m.
"It's not really a competition,鈥 Sher said. "This has got nothing to do with winning in terms of who gets the best score. This is just about fun. The winners are the people who raise the most money for Big Brothers Big Sisters 鈥 and of course, then Big Brothers Big Sisters are the real winners. We do appreciate all the support we get for this.鈥
The curling event is the second of two major fund-raisers for the organization 鈥 the first being the Bowl for Kids' Sake held each spring.
Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters has 14 Big Brother-Little Brother matches, and four Littles waiting for Bigs. However, the charity is blessed with more Big Sisters than Littles.
Big Brothers Big Sisters will launch in-school mentoring programming to three Yukon schools in December.
