Local slo-pitch players were back on the field this weekend for the opening tournament of the co-ed league in divisions two and four.
The finals took place Sunday morning at the Pepsi Softball Centre and pitted Dave's Cleaning Crew (DCC) against Mister DJ in the Division two finals and the KK Mutts against the Riverdale Super A Foods Jays in Division four.
Extra innings were needed to decide the winner in the Division two match-up after DCC rebounded from an early deficit.
"It was a really good team effort,鈥 said Carmen Semaschuk of DCC.
"We came together offensively and defensively like we never have before.鈥
After Mister DJ got out to an early lead, the game entered extra innings with the score knotted at 15.
With April Matthews on second base, Sean Munro stepped up to the plate for DCC and delivered.
"It was probably his best hit all weekend and he brought her home,鈥 said Semaschuk.
"It was a close play at the plate and it could have gone either way,鈥 said Tanya Sage of Mister DJ.
"It was a great game and an exciting final. That's the way a final should be.鈥
DCC reached the final after a close game with KalTire on Saturday night.
"They are a really good team and we just happened to come out on top,鈥
Seamschuk said of the semifinals. "I think it surprised us.鈥
Semaschuk said the unexpected win may have contributed to some early nerves in the final match up.
"I think that's where the errors came from,鈥 she said. "We weren't expecting to make it that far. We kind of looked like the Bad 麻豆社区 Bears in the first two innings.鈥
Luckily for them, the team found their stride at the right time.
"There was a lot of good playing on both sides,鈥 she said. "It was a lot of fun, friendly but competitive.鈥
Despite dropping the final, Sage said the team's performance was a great way to start the tournament season.
"It was great ball all weekend,鈥 she said. "All of our games were close.鈥
In the Division four finals, the KK Mutts were able to prevail over the Riverdale Super A Foods Jays, 12-6.
The Riverdale team entered the final having gone undefeated and carrying the momentum of beating the KK Mutts in the semifinals the night before.
In the finals, the big bats that had been carrying the Riverdale team disappeared.
"The finals was the one game that wasn't good,鈥 said Matt McCarthy.
"The batting wasn't there and we had a few errors in the field.鈥
McCarthy said the team was able to get the win in the semis through smart playmaking and steady hitting.
"We were getting on base and doing everything right in that game but in the finals it just wasn't there.鈥
The KK Mutts were able to establish a lead early in the game and never looked back.
"We were pretty confident and we really came together as a team,鈥 said Shayla Malchow.
The win was extra sweet for Malchow as her younger brother plays for Riverdale.
After dropping the game the night before, Malchow said they were looking for revenge in the finals.
"We wanted to win,鈥 she said.
"Hopefully we will play them a few more times throughout the year, it was a lot of fun.鈥
