A Dawson City soccer team
A Dawson City soccer team led the charge for medals at last weekend鈥檚 Yukon Soccer Championships, which were held at various fields around Whitehorse.
The team went undefeated on their way to the U16 division title.
The Dawsonites have been playing together for about a decade, said coach Irwin Gaw, who has coached them since they began playing soccer.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e a great group of kids,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e really worked hard to improve.鈥
Over the years, he鈥檚 hammered down positioning on the field and how to support one another during play.
Where the team really excels is moving the ball forward and running.
With U16 the oldest division currently on offer at the Yukon championships, this might be the final year for the team in the tournament.
But as long as there is interest, Gaw said that he鈥檒l continue coaching.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e all very enthusiastic,鈥 he said of the U16 team.
In鈥圖awson City, the team will scrimmage with each other and occasionally will suit up for fun games against the adult recreational players, many of whom Gaw coached when they were five or six years old.
Gaw was thankful for Chris Ross, who coached all three of the Whitehorse area teams in the U16 division and who ensured they had enough players among the squads to field teams for each game.
In the U16 division, Changing Gears won silver and Coates Services took home bronze.
In the U13 division, Robert Service Campground won gold with Titan Service taking silver and Marble Slab earning bronze.
Titan Gaming and Collectables won gold in the U11 division with Whitehorse Optometrist winning silver and Yukon鈥圷amaha taking home bronze.
In the U10 division, Canada Flooring won gold with Blue River taking home silver and Sport Yukon earning bronze.
Sport Yukon won gold in the U9 division with Up North Adventure taking silver and Dawson earning bronze.
In the 04-06 girls division, Medicine Chest Pharmacy won gold with Driving Force taking silver and Jacob鈥檚 Industries earning bronze.
