Eighteen-goal thriller lights up Rapids soccer
The highest-scoring game in Whitehorse Rapids over-35 soccer history
The highest-scoring game in Whitehorse Rapids over-35 soccer history was played out on Saturday morning at the Canada Games Centre with both Tony鈥檚 Pizza and Klondike Business Solutions hitting nine goals apiece.
Early morning fans were treated to a goal fest never seen before. Tony鈥檚 Pizza led 6-2 at the break and seemed to be cruising to an easy win, however Danny Macdonald鈥檚 KBS team didn鈥檛 know they were beaten.
With the Pizza boys visibly tiring KBS hit back, banging in goals from all angles, none better than Keith Welch鈥檚 effort.
With only a minute to go, and the scoreboard showing 9-9, Tony鈥檚 was praying for the final whistle as the blues skipper Macdonald raced down the wing, crossed to an unmarked David Rayo, who uncharacteristically fluffed his lines leaving honours even.
Scorers for Tony鈥檚 were Justin Carre with four, Phil Jackson (3), George Maratos and Arnold Hedstrom, while Danny Macdonald (4), Eric Murphy (2), James McCollough, Keith Welch and David Rayo all hitting the net for KBS.
Bousquet鈥檚 medicine not strong enough
Dr. Rob Bousquet has been treating fans of over-35 soccer in doses of entertainment for many years, however even he was not good enough to anesthetize the power of Pepsi, as they ran away to a 5-2 win over Yukon Info.com.
The game was a bit of an anticlimax in comparison to the first, with the half time scoreboard showing no goals scored.
The scoreboard started to tick in the second half as Pepsi began to dominate proceedings scoring goals through Guliano Rayo (2), Kristian Goncze, Myles Dolphin and Simon Pulido.
The Doc was assisted by Yukon Info鈥檚 captain Jan Aalt Van Den Hoorn, both collecting goals in consolation.
Pepsi鈥檚 win takes them back to the summit of the league at the top of the table with KBS chasing hard, one point behind.
The league will continue to play through the holidays with KBS taking on Yukon Info in the early game Saturday and Pepsi facing off against Yukon Brewing.
