The Whitehorse Female Mustangs finished their season on a high note in Niagara Falls, Ont. last weekend.

The team participated in the 2014 Niagara Bauer Hockey Challenge, finishing third in the Under-16 AAA鈥坉ivision, coach Louis Bouchard said.

"The Mustangs out-performed all expectations in a spring tournament against the best of the Toronto and Boston region,鈥 the proud coach said. "It was a great way to finish the season and get started on the next.鈥

The majority of the club will represent the territory at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C. next February.

Bouchard said he will give the girls the month of May to recuperate before resuming off-ice training in June and hitting the ice in July.

The team opened their tournament last Friday with a 6-1 loss to Toronto-based Hub City Hockey. Sierra Oakley scored the first of her three goals to pace Whitehorse.

Later that day, the girls dropped their second game, also 6-1, to the eventual champion Toronto Ice Queens. Monica Johnson scored the Mustangs lone goal in that game.

On Saturday, however, the club dominated the Burrillville Broncos from Rhode Island, beating them 4-1.

Captain Chyanne Spenner and Davina McLeod each had a goal and two assists, while Oakley sniped a pair of goals alongside one helper.

The Mustangs would drop their semifinal 5-1 to the Ice Queens on Sunday, however. Mykhaila McInroy had the lone goal.
