Flames, Jets among hockey teams off to hot starts

The AON Flames downed the Air North Jets 4-2 in oldtimer hockey action last night at Takhini Arena to take sole ownership of top spot in the league standings.

The AON Flames downed the Air North Jets 4-2 in oldtimer hockey action last night at Takhini Arena to take sole ownership of top spot in the league standings.

Tony Park, Bob Allison, Mike Rispin and Terry Berquist each put pucks past Air North goalie Jason Adams to secure the win.

Wade Harrison and Ron Cruikshank responded for the Jets.

With the win, the Flames (7-2-1) took sole ownership of first place, one point up on both EDI (7-4-0) and Yukon Inn (7-2-0).

EDI dropped their game to the Firth Rangers 6-4 in the early game last night. Guy Gorrell had a pair to lead the way, while Matt Sills, Glen Heinbigner, Ron Billingsley and league-points leader Charles Brodhagen added singles.

Pat Tobler scored twice for EDI in the loss, while Adam Green and Jared Barrault also dented the twine.

Yukon Inn goaltender Matt King leads the league with a goals-against-average of 2.25 and one shoutout in four games played.

Rec A Jets continue to work towards perfect season

The Air North Jets' dream of a perfect season remain intact as the club has streaked out to a 9-0-0 record to start the Whitehorse Rec Hockey League A Division season.

The club is six points up on both Yukon Brewing and SLFS-Murphy Built, who are tied for second with 12 points each.

Three Jets lead the league scoring standings early in the season, with Evan Campbell (13G, 14A), Kane Dawe (5G, 22A) and Ryan Gleason (15G, 10A) holding down the top three spots.

SLFS-Murphy Built goalie Benoit Grenier has the top ranking with a 3.11 GAA.

In game action earlier this week, his team beat winless Gold Pan Avalanche 6-1 Monday night.

Matt Dickson (2), Skylar Hougen, Dave Schroeder (SH), Nathan Dumont and Steve Israel all scored in the win, while Greg Thompson responded for Gold Pan in the loss.

In other action Monday night, the KBL Environmental Midget A Mustangs downed Narrow Gauge 7-3.

Levi Johnson netted a pair to lead the way, with Braeden Paun-Burnett, Kadin Kormendy, Chance Goodman, Ryan MacDonald and Jarrett Peterson adding the others.

Phillip Mullin, Kevin Hannam and Ryan Sylvestre scored for Narrow Gauge.

Led by Tyler Murray (32G,11A) and Stuart Murray (7G, 21A), ERS Octane sits atop the B Division standings with a record of 7-1-1. Yukon Inn Boiler Room (6-2-1) is second.

Teamoglobin, White Storm battle for early-season women's lead

Two teams have risen to the top of the Whitehorse Women's Hockey Association through the first nine games of the season.

Teamoglobin (7-1-1) and White Storm (5-1-3) are ranked one and two in the league, with 15 and 13 points respectively. Three teams are tied for third, as each of the GreenBeans, Grizzly Beers and Grey Matter have seven points.

Grey Matter's Amy Vermeulen leads the league with 11 goals and two assists for 13 points, while Sasha Merrell of the Grizzly Beers and Teamoglobin's Laura Grieve each have seven goals and five assists for 12 points.

White Storm keeper Veronique Lafond leads all goaltenders with a 1.56 GAA through nine games.

In action this week, Stephanie Hedley scored twice as Greenbeans tied Grizzly Beers 2-2 Tuesday night. Merrell and Joelle Hodgins replied for the Beers.

On Monday, Greenbeans tied Grey Matter 6-6. Vermeulen netted a hat trick to lead Grey Matter while six different scorers netted goals for the Greenbeans.
