Awarding the Huskies captaincy to Evan Campbell was a no-brainer.
Awarding the Huskies captaincy to Evan Campbell was a no-brainer.
鈥淗e鈥檚 the right guy for the job,鈥 said last year鈥檚 captain Jared Tuton, who will wear an A on his shirt this season.
鈥淚鈥坈ouldn鈥檛 think of a better person to have it. He鈥檚 got all the tools. He鈥檚 going to be on the team forever, and everyone listens to him. He鈥檚 a good player and a real good guy in the dressing room.鈥
鈥淲e鈥檙e in it for the long run,鈥 the 30-year-old blue-liner added.
Tuton, who is now living in Grand Prairie, Alta., missed the Huskies鈥 first series this past weekend.
Head coach Mike Tuton said the captaincy shuffle was his younger brother鈥檚 idea.
鈥淗e didn鈥檛 feel right having the C and not practising all the hours that these guys are putting in,鈥 he said last week. 鈥淗e approached me in the fall and told me he didn鈥檛 quite feel right about it.
鈥淪o we had a conversation that lasted about five seconds, and the name we came up with was Evan Campbell.鈥
Coach Tuton praised the five-foot-10, 195-pound winger for his commitment to the team.
鈥淵ou want to talk about a heart-and-soul guy ... He鈥檚 never missed a practice, never taken a practice off. Every shift, he gives you everything and that鈥檚 the kind of leadership that we鈥檙e after.鈥
Campbell, 25, said wearing the C for Yukon鈥檚 senior hockey team is an honour.
鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to get that recognition from, not only the coaching staff, but the other players on the team,鈥 he said.
Campbell, whose older brother Reid Campbell is playing pro hockey in Mississippi, is no stranger to leadership positions.
He previously captained the Jr. B Peninsula Panthers in North Saanich, B.C., and also wore a letter with the Mustangs.
Campbell had a quiet opening weekend by his standards, registering just one assist on Kane Dawe鈥檚 first-period goal Saturday night.
