Fort Nelson continued their storybook season, capturing the Yukon Hockey Bantam Championships title in an uncontested final against Whitehorse鈥檚 P & M Recycling 9-3 Sunday afternoon.

Fort Nelson skated through the weekend tournament, which featured nine teams from Juneau, Tok, Fort Nelson, Yukon Communities and five local teams, undefeated.

鈥淭he boys played great this weekend,鈥� said Fort Nelson coach Harrison Dickey. 鈥淓very line was skating hard, going hard. They wanted to win.鈥�

The Fort Nelson boys returned to the house-league Bantam Championships after finishing just off the podium last year.

鈥淚t feels good,鈥� said captain Kapordeep Dhilion. 鈥淟ast year we came here, we got beat, we got fourth place and we finally win it.鈥�

P & M Recycling started the afternoon final off in the lead thanks to two early goals by Hugo Burgess and Cole McCulloch.

But their lead was short-lived as Fort Nelson tied it up heading into the second frame (Ozzy MacDonald and Brennan Ewonchuk).

The second period belonged to Fort Nelson, as they opened scoring 30 seconds into the period and didn鈥檛 let up.

Goals went to Brody Mould (2), Kaleb Roberts, Kale Dvorak and Jarrod Kotchea.

Fort Nelson capitalized on P & M鈥檚 sloppy passing, increasing their lead in the third despite an effort by Hugo Burgess at 8:25 to bring the Whitehorse boys back into it.

Kotchea and Tyler Kendlell got Fort Nelson鈥檚 last goals of the game.

As the buzzer rang off, the Fort Nelson bench emptied onto the ice, throwing helmets gloves and sticks to the ice as they enveloped their goalie in a monstrous hug.

Dhilion said that the team has been trying different line combinations in an effort to get better chemistry on the ice.

鈥淭his group has been playing together for a long time,鈥� said Dickey. 鈥淥nce they get rolling the momentum carries through.鈥�
