Jeff Wiggins continues to put the Yukon on the golfing map.
Jeff Wiggins continues to put the Yukon on the golfing map.
Mountain View Golf Club's director of golf finished third out of 48 players in the PGA of B.C. Club Pro Championship this week at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.
Wiggins shot a 72 and 74 to finish at even par, just three strokes back of tournament winner Scott Rodgers.
The Yukoner took home a cheque for $1,500 at the tournament, which wrapped up Tuesday.
Global TV named Wiggins one of the favourites for the title, a nomination that took him by surprise.
"I didn't play in any events this year, other than the pro-am we had here,鈥 he told the Star today. "I was too busy with work, obviously we had such a great summer. So I had no expectations going down to Vancouver, as far as placing or playing well.鈥
Wiggins said playing defensively on the front-nine Tuesday may have cost him a shot at the title.
Regardless, he said playing in the Yukon prepared him well.
"Mountain View Golf Club is one of the toughest golf courses I think we have in the country,鈥 he said. "When we leave the territory, we're better players for having played this facility.鈥
Wiggins said he is known as a "mudder鈥 鈥 a golfer who can simply show up anywhere and play a steady round, regardless of weather or course conditions. That strategy helped him excel in some tough conditions.
Wiggins returned to the territory briefly, but heads south again today in advance of a one-day pro-am tournament scheduled to take place at the Rise Golf Club in Vernon, Saturday.
Locally, Mountain View will shut down for the season after this Sunday.
