The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club is excited to welcome home Graham Nishikawa, who helped guide Paralympic skier Brian McKeever to three gold medals at the Paralympic Winter Games.
Nishikawa, 30, is returning to the ski club Saturday to meet and greet club members and others who supported him throughout his Olympic journey. Fittingly, he will also provide a guided ski.
Nishikawa began his ski career exploring the trails in and around Whitehorse. He joined the ski club's jackrabbit program and worked his way up to the Territorial Experimental Ski Training program.
After getting started racing competitively, Graham joined the Yukon ski team, led by 1988 Olympian Alain Masson.
Nishikawa was drawn to cross-country skiing because it combined great camaraderie and physical activity with the great outdoors.
A member of Canada's senior development squad, Nishikawa qualified to represent Canada at the World Championships in 2013 for the first time at the elite level.
He has enjoyed many successful seasons competing at the world championships since.
His younger sister, Emily, recently competed at the Winter Olympics.
On Saturday, he will lead a guided ski from the chalet at 9:30 a.m. This will be a family event, and children are encouraged to participate.
Following the guided ski, there will be a meet and greet time with Nishikawa and his gold medal at the ski club. Snacks and drinks will be available.
