Hare scramble a 鈥榯otal body workout' for dirt bikers

The local dirt bike community gathered for a final time this season Sunday for the Yukon Cross Country Motorcycle Association's year-end hare scramble.

More than 100 people 鈥 competitors and fans 鈥 gathered at the Schirmer family ranch for the Cowley Creek Hare Scramble 2.

"We saw some new faces 鈥 at least five or six new riders,鈥 race marshal Mike Beaman told the Star.

The event ran along the same schedule as the first hare scramble Aug. 25 at the Schirmer property near Kookatsoon Lake on the Klondike Highway. This time, the trails were reversed however.

The hare scramble began with a 20-minute prologue race to determine start positions, and was followed by a 20-minute peewee race.

The hare scramble featured single track and open trail on a B loop with expert riders diverting onto a more difficult technical trail called the A loop.

Beaman said riders were spent following the races.

"Dirt biking is an excellent physical activity. You can get a serious workout riding a trail 鈥 It's a total body workout and is proven as a viable physical exercise. It's great for kids to work out aggression and things like that. It's a perfectly healthy release of energy for kids, and it's a family activity.鈥

The Extremely Moving Youth Society, a local dance group, ran the concession stand as a fund-raiser.

The event marked the end of the association's third year of racing.

Beaman has high hopes that a solution can be found between the association and the territorial government regarding legislation restricting trail riding on public land.

If a solution is found, the riders would be able to compete at a variety of other locations.

"You've got to give the kids a place to go,鈥 Beaman said. "You don't need to throw taxpayers' money at it, because our stuff is all built with volunteer work. You just need to say 鈥楪o here and do it.'鈥

He said two properties the group has raced on in the past are the Stinky Lake sewage lagoon and the Copper Haul Road gravel pit.

"We're hoping we can negotiate with the city and YTG so that maybe we can get a lease on that land or a special-use permit,鈥 he said. "It's something that we're going to start pursuing here more actively because obviously something has to get done about it. These kids aren't going away.鈥
