A sparkling performance by Aidan Harvey helped the Whitehorse swim club strike gold in Kamloops, B.C., last weekend.

The 11-year-old earned the first gold medal of his career in the 50-metre backstroke at the 22nd annual Kamloops June Classic with a time of 37.17 seconds.

Harvey is a good listener who often requests feedback and works on details in practice, said Glacier Bears head coach Malwina Bukszowana.

"This is what coaches want to see,鈥 she told the Star. "His gold was well-deserved. He was very happy after that race.鈥

Harvey's gold-medal swim Sunday capped a weekend that saw him place fourth in the 100 Back A final Friday and seventh in the 200 Back A final Saturday.

Harvey wasn't the only Glacier Bear to snare gold, however.

Cassis Lindsay, 13, also picked up a shiny medal in the 50 Free A final Friday, and finished fourth in the 100 Free Saturday.

"Cassis had a hard Saturday with four finals and short breaks between them, so she coped with it very well,鈥 said Bukszowana.

It proved to be good training for the young swimmer prior to her AAA and national age-group championship meets next month.

Her younger sister, Rennes, added two silvers to the haul, in the 50 Free and 100 Free.

Thirteen-year-old Luke Bakica had his breaststroke working, but just failed to medal, finishing fourth in the 200 Breast.

He would also finish fifth in the 100 Breast and eighth in the 50 Breast.

While his breaststroke form looked good, Bukszowana said with some more coordination, he is on the verge of big things.

"He only needs to think more,鈥 she said. "I am sure there is more he can do.鈥

Other Whitehorse swimmers to compete at the meet included Donovan Bielz, Emma Boyd, Cassidy Cairns, Taylor Harvey, Riley Huston-Gingras, Rebecca Koser, Brooklyn Massie, Nathan Muir-Cressman and Shailyn Moore.

"The swim meet was fun, well-organized and went well for all of us,鈥 Bukszowana said. "Swimmers were smiling together and cheering each other on.鈥

The coach said she was satisfied with what her athletes learned this year 鈥 including how to pace and when to attack.

So proud of all the Bears and their performance. Hats off to Aidan for bringing home a gold. And a big congratulations to Coach Bukszowana for developing these great young swimmers.
