Lee Hawkings got the better of Forest Pearson at the second orienteering championship of the Yukon summer.

Hawkings topped the expert division at the mid-distance championship last Wednesday, finishing the 3.3-km course at Lewes lake in a brisk 32:13.

Pearson, who bested Hawkings to win the sprint championship two weeks ago, finished second this time, in 33:02.

The two will square off once more tomorrow night during the long-distance championships at the Magnusson ski trails.

Trevor Bray once again finished third, with a time of 36:22.

A total of 57 orienteers competed in the mid-distance event, in four categories.

Jeremy Johnson earned victory in the advanced category, completing the 2.2-km course in 34:48, besting Pippa McNeil by more than three minutes.

Meanwhile, Logan Florkiewicz topped the intermediate group, completing the 2-km course in 29:23, with Savannah Cash placing second.

Elias Sagar won the novice division by finishing the 2-km course in 19:08, while Finn Pearson was runner-up.

A small group of the advanced and expert participants did spot a bear near one of the controls, said organizer Ross Burnett.
