It was close, but George Hilderman and his curling rink are the territory's senior men's champions.
It was close, but George Hilderman and his curling rink are the territory's senior men's champions.
The Yukon Curling Association's Senior Men's Championship took place this weekend at the Whitehorse Curling Club.
Hilderman's rink from the Whitehorse Curling Club won two straight games on Saturday over Gord Zealand's rink, also representing the Whitehorse Curling Club.
The two-team championship followed a best-of-three format, with two very close games on Saturday being enough to declare a champion.
Hilderman's rink, which also includes third Doug Gee, second Doug Hamilton, and lead Dale Enzenauer, was the winner of both Saturday draws.
After winning 9-5 in the morning, Hilderman's group again came out on top in a much closer 6-5 afternoon matchup that required an extra end to be decided.
The Zealand rink, which includes third Herb Balsam, second Bob Walker, and lead Clarence Jack kept both games very close.
The group made a variety of difficult shots, capped by Zealand's draw to the button in the 10th end of the second game, forcing the extra.
The Hilderman rink has earned the chance to represent the Yukon at the CCA Senior National Championship March 22 to 30 in Yellowknife.
The event will be Hilderman's fifth appearance in a Canadian championship.
However, the group must first compete in the relegation round games March 20 and 21 to earn a berth into the main round-robin event.
The Senior Women's Championship were also scheduled to take place this past weekend in the Yukon capital, but no teams registered for the event.
The next YCA Championship event is the Mixed Championship, scheduled for March 15 and 16 at the Whitehorse Curling Club.
