The Yukon Hockey Academy will feature a new slate of talented coaches this summer.
The Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association's summer training program for players age eight to 18 will include Garry Davidson, general manager of the WHL's Everett Silvertips, and his son, Ty Davidson, coach of the KIJHL's Jr. B Golden Rockets.
Representatives from the Midget AAA Notre Dame Hounds and two University of Alaska teams will also be featured.
Four week-long camps will run throughout the month of July.
The academy was organized to present a cheaper alternative for Yukon players heading south for similar summer camps, said WMHA head coach Clint Mylymok.
"These guys are all professionals,鈥 he said of the instructors coming to the Yukon capital. "I know most of these guys personally, and they're all going to be real good for these kids.鈥
Their presence in Whitehorse will also provide networking opportunities for players aiming to make the jump to AAA or junior hockey.
"It's introducing parents and kids to these coaches,鈥 Mylymok explained. "I think it's a good mix for the exposure part, and they'll get some good feedback.鈥
The camps will also offer strategies for dryland training and team tactics.
Mylymok said the academy has been received well, with players from Germany, British Columbia and Alaska slated to attend. Openings are still available for interested players, however.
Notre Dame Hounds representatives will include Mylymok's twin brother Jeremy.

The process to recruit prospective coaches for the next WMHA season will also begin soon, Mylymok said. Visit http://whitehorseminorhockey.ca.

I think it is long overdue that Whitehorse has finally gotten some camps like this. What a great chance for the kids (mine included) to get to skate with hockey minds like this.
