Three more softball teams claimed early-season tournament victories yesterday in Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch action.

Twenty-eight teams in three divisions took to the diamonds for their opening tournaments, and when the dust settled Sunday at the Pepsi Softball鈥圕entre, three stood victorious.

The MOB won the Div. 2 tournament, the Co-Operaiders earned victory in Div. 3A, and the G&R鈥圥awn Stars were the last team standing in Div. 3B.

The next major local tournament will be Dustball June 19 to 22.

Home run party leads MOB over Hobos

A brand-new team to the league continued its hot start, going undefeated en route to the Div. 2 title Sunday.

Matheson Oil Burners (MOB) topped Yukon Tire Mechanical Happy's Hobos 23-9 in the championship game, thanks to four home runs from their heavy-hitting offence.

Andrew Schmidt smashed two balls over the fence, while Dakota Organ and Shayla Roulston also hit home runs en route to the lopsided win.

A timely hit from Allison Leavens proved to be the turning point in the game, added Schmidt, the team's captain.

Another highlight was a successful double play turned by second baseman Kaylee Wabisca and first baseman Roulston.

"We've had no losses all season, but we've been in some pretty close games,鈥 said Schmidt. "It's really a team dynamic. When we're laughing and having fun, everyone's on their games. When we're not, we can get rattled.鈥

Other players on the winning squad include Sean Schmidt, Ryan McLaren, Ryan Lane, Jenny Cook, Patty Wallingham and Cody Underhill.

Co-Operaiders edge young stars in Div. 3A

The Co-Operaiders capped off an undefeated tournament with a 24-17 win over Glacier Drilling Sunday.

The final inning was played in a light rain.

"It was definitely a fun-filled weekend,鈥 said Co-Operaiders coach Tarra Mikeli. "We really had to work for our wins and had to play some great calibre ball, so it was beautiful in that sense. This wasn't an easy ride.鈥

The team has some fresh faces on the roster this season, and the weekend helped solidify the group.

"We dressed 14 batters today and everyone came through,鈥 Mikeli said. "We played a team that was half our age. They were definitely right out of high school and they gave us a good run for our money.鈥

Mikeli said the defensive excellence of third baseman Stephen Johnson and shortstop Chris Nash was exemplary.

Other players contributing to the tournament win were Aaron Mones, Trevor Matthews, Cody Nadeau, Nathan Pullar, Geordo Matechuk, Joe Wainwright, Linda Matthews, Teaghan Wilson, Linda Hillier, Nicole Beaudry, Samantha Davidson, Sue Stokes-Nash and Jenny Ford.

New-look Pawn Stars hold off Badgers in final

The G&R鈥圥awn Stars held off the Advanced Security Badgers for the second straight time Sunday, winning the Div. 3B tournament final by a score of 15-12.

The Pawn Stars had beaten the Badgers 18-15 in extra innings Saturday to earn a berth in the final, after scoring eight runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and force extras.

Second baseman and captain Jennifer Saindon said her team is a mixture of new and old faces from the team that won last year's Div. 4 championship, forcing a move up to Div. 3.

"This tournament really helped us gel as a team,鈥 she said post-game. "We have a strong lineup and everyone had their moments this weekend.

"(Winning the title) is a really good boost to our morale.鈥

Aside from Saindon, championship team members included Sebastien Johnson, Steve Wort, Jonathan Ewing, Joshua Davies, Kenny McInnis, Joe Postnikeff, Shawn Thebeau, Matthew Arcand, Pete Delaney, Daniel Clark, Johnny Mackenzie, Lee Gallant, Jaylene Ellard, Brittany Stewart, Kaitlyn Shupe, Mickey Morgan, Kim Montour, Montanna Coburn and Stephanie Paradis.
