The Air North Jets finished off their dream season in style last night, taking the Rec A division championship series two games to zero with a 7-5 defeat of SLFS/Murphy Built.
On Monday, Air North hammered their opponents 10-4 to take Game 1.
Last night, Phil Harry scored a hat trick and Rob Stuckey had two goals and an assist as the Jets eked out a victory in a game that seemed much closer.
Evan Campbell and Mike Fraser also scored in the win.
Skyler Hougen led the way for SLFS/Murphy Built in the loss, with two second-period goals and an assist.
Steve Israel also scored a pair of goals, while Justin Quigley had a goal and three assists.
"They're an unbelievable team,鈥 Hougen said of the champion Jets. "They're young. They're fast. We said from the start 鈥 we had to play our best game, our goalie had to play his best game, and we just had to get in their way. We're happy with the result after playing against them all year and getting dominated so bad.
"It's fun watching these guys play, but it sucks when you're the guy when it's going through your legs and stuff.鈥
Hougen said the Jets brought up the skill level required to play in the A division by a considerable margin.
"The last couple of years have not been as good as this year,鈥 he said. "It brings all our levels up.鈥
Hougen finished as the overall playoff scoring leader with 15 goals and eight assists, including a five-goal game against Roadhouse last month.
Air North suffered only three losses all year, two in the regular season 鈥 one being a forfeit on Super Bowl Sunday 鈥 and one in the round-robin of the Rendezvous Tournament that they eventually won.
Following last night's contest, goaltender Rob Young finished the season with a 32-1-1 record.
The Jets finished the regular season 29-2-0, then rapped off a 6-0-1 record in the playoffs.
A newcomer to the team this season, Young admitted his confidence level was sky high playing behind a talent-laden team like the Jets.
"I haven't really had to hold the guys in much this year,鈥 he chuckled post-game. "As far as my job, it was just show up and put the pads on. They've been pretty dominant. It makes my job easy back there.鈥
When Hougen scored his first goal last night to give his SLFS/Murphy Built a 4-3 lead, Young said Campbell, the team's leading scorer, skated over with a message for him.
"He said 鈥楧on't worry. We're going to get it back right away here.' Sure enough we did,鈥 Young said.
Less than two minutes later, Harry scored his hat trick goal to tie the game, and then Campbell made true on his word with a goal to put the Jets ahead 5-4.
"It's a good feeling,鈥 Young said of the championship win. "We work all year for it, and had almost a flawless season.
We've played some games where we've went down, but we've come back every time. It's just a winning culture.鈥
Harry said the championship win avenges the Jets loss to the Midget A Mustangs in last year's playoff final.
"Last year, we lost a heartbreaker in the finals,鈥 he said. "It was nice to get this win finally. I'm happy to finally get here, and get the big win.
"We came out hungry every game. We're a young bunch of guys. We're all full of piss and vinegar, and we all want to win every game.鈥
"It's one of the best teams I've ever played on for sure, by far,鈥 he said. "Definitely an amazing team to be a part of.鈥
Stuckey led the way in Monday's game with a hat trick and one assist, while Campbell added two goals and three helpers.
