Joel Macht at the top of the pack in Long Lake Triathlon

Joel Macht and Ian Parker are no strangers to the local triathlon scene.

By Sam Riches on August 13, 2012

Joel Macht and Ian Parker are no strangers to the local triathlon scene.

Parker owns the course record in the Long Lake Triathlon and the two athletes were back at the top this past weekend in the event.

Last week, the duo also competed against each other at the Yukon River Trail Marathon.

Parker ultimately led the way, defeating Macht by slightly more than a minute in the half-marathon category.

It was Parker's first ever half-marathon win.

This past weekend, the two athletes exchanged results.

Macht set the pace in the individual category of the Long Lake Triathlon, crossing the finish line in a time of one hour and 43 minutes.

Parker was less than three minutes behind to take second place in the men's open division.

Beginning in a mass start on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., the local athletes dove into Long Lake for a one-kilometre swim, before hopping on their mountain bikes for 15.5-km ride and finishing the event with six-km run.

In last year's event, Macht and Parker shared the top finish as teammates.

Alongside Stephen Waterreus the trio formed the only male team in the event, the Long Lake Lotharios.

This year Waterreus was the lone competition in the male master's division and finished the event in 1:45, the second fastest individual time to Macht and the third fastest time on the day.

Though Macht got the best of Parker in this year's event, Parker's 2010 course record of 1:33 still stands.

On the women's side, local ski coach Veronique Theriault was the top finisher in 2:25.

Alison Perrin took second in 2:27 while Ella Parker was third in 2:32.

In the team divisions, The Fireweeds led the open female category, pacing the field with a time of 2:11 and crossing the finish line four minutes ahead of second place finishers, Winging It.

The fastest time of the day belonged to Sue's Team, who competed in the mixed category.

The team, composed of Sue Bogle, Guy Gorrell and Stephanie Dixon, reached the finish in 1:37.

The team got off to a great start with Dixon, the decorated Paralympic athlete, blowing away the competition in the water.

Dixon is also the head coach of the local swimming club—the Glacier Bears and was awarded the Diamond Jubilee medal this past June in recognition of her contributions to the community.

Gorrell, who was part of the Friday Oldtimers, the top team in the whipper division of this year's Whitehorse Oldtimers Hockey Tournament, was also impressive in the mountain bike portion of the race.

Bringing the team home in the six-km run was Bogle, a standout in the local running scene.

The team had more than a 14 minute lead on second place finishers, Namaste.

Rounding out the top three was team Given'er who reached the finish in 1:55.

In total, 16 individuals and 14 teams competed in the triathlon.
