The recent performances by four Yukon highland dancers in Alberta have left their coach feeling proud.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had big smiles on our faces since we鈥檝e come back,鈥 Klondike Highland Dancers instructor Errinlee Fitzsimmons told the Star this morning. 鈥淭he girls did really well in representing the Yukon. I am one proud dance instructor.鈥

The dance troupe competed in Red Deer Highland Games June 28, less than a week after performing their routines at a competition in Edmonton.

Two dancers earned overall trophies for their age categories against rival dancers from across Alberta.

Ten-year-old Cadence Milford went up against nine dancers in the beginner category and proceeded to win the overall trophy.

She placed first in the sword and flora dances, silver in the lilt, bronze in the fling, and fourth in the Seann Truibhas dance.

Kiarra Fitzsimmons, 12, went up against 13 dancers in the beginner class, and also earned first in the sword and flora dances. She then finished second in the fling and lilt, and third in the Seann Truibhas dance.

Kylie Pfeiffer, 13, competed in her age group鈥檚 beginner category against eight dancers.

She would place fourth in the Seann Truibhas, and added two fifth-place finishes in sword and lilt to her day.

Jordyn Cowan, 14, won a bronze in the fling, and placed fourth and fifth in the sword and flora, respectively.

She was competing against 13 dancers in her age group鈥檚 novice category.

鈥淵ou never know who you鈥檙e going to have at the competition in terms of dancers,鈥 said Errinlee Fitzsimmons. 鈥淏ut the trophies were a very pleasant surprise. It was really nice.

鈥淚t was probably one of our best years in a while, in terms of bringing home medals and trophies.鈥

At the Ellerslie Highland Games June 22, Kiarra Fitzsimmons won four gold medals, earning her the overall trophy for her age group.

Golds came in the sword, Seann Truibhas, lilt, and flora dances, and she also earned a silver in her rendition of the fling.

Pfeiffer placed second in the sword dance, while Cowan placed fourth in her age category.

鈥淚鈥坱hink they did really well,鈥 said Errinlee Fitzsimmons, who noted both Kiarra Fitzsimmons and Cowan have had previous experience in Outside competition.

The competitive solo dancing routine was derived in the Scottish Highlands.
