Koltun rink goes 3-1 in championship round, defeats Ontario and Nova Scotia

Yukon's junior women's curling team defeated Ontario 10-3 at the M&M Meats National Junior Championships in Fort McMurray, Alta. Friday morning.

Sarah Koltun's rink took three points in the first end and one in the second, giving up two in the third. Yukon came back, taking three more in the fourth, and one in each of the fifth and sixth ends. Ontario stole one in the seventh, but Yukon took the final point in the eighth.

With the win, Koltun's rink was scheduled to play Quebec in a tiebreaker at 1 p.m. today (Alberta time). The winner is scheduled to play Manitoba in tomorrow morning's semi-final to earn a shot at B.C., which has already secured a spot in Sunday's final.

The women's victory this morning comes on the heels of their win against Nova Scotia Thursday, when they also defeated the maritime province 10-3.

The Yukon rink took three points in the first end and one in the second, giving up two to Nova Scotia in the third. Yukon took one more in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth, giving up one more in the seventh before clinching the final point in the eighth end.

The two wins leave Yukon with a 7-3 record overall and 3-1 record in championship round play.

On the men's side, Yukon is 5-4 in the seeding round.

Will Mahoney's rink defeated Newfoundland and Labrador Thursday evening 8-5. Yukon took two points in the first end, neither team took a point in the second, but Newfoundland and Labrador took a point in each of the third and fourth ends.

Yukon took three points in the fifth, giving up two in the sixth. Mahoney's rink came back taking one point in the seventh, and two in the eighth, giving up the final point in the ninth.

Mahoney's rink also defeated Northern Ontario Thursday afternoon, 7-6.
