Down 3-0 early in the third period, the EGT鈥圢anooks went to work, scoring four straight goals to win a thrilling A Division final at Takhini Arena last night.
The 4-3 win over the Nannock Warriors was the final game of the 37th annual Kilrich/Northerm Yukon Native Hockey Tournament, which saw 40 teams participate.
A large crowd was treated to a suspense-filled A final yesterday, as goals by Derek Johnstone, Max Kotakak and Bill McKay saw the Nannock Warriors build up a 3-0 lead.
But the Nanooks would not be denied, scoring four straight goals courtesy of Gerald Desjarlais, Dwayne Seward, top defenceman Nathan Briere and MVP Cody Pederson.
A late tripping penalty assessed to the Warriors thwarted any potential comeback.
"All the boys just came together,鈥濃坰aid Pederson, 26, from Buffalo Narrows, Sask. "We just beared down and started playing with some pride, and we ended up getting the job done.鈥
"We were down by three goals ... We just had to figure out a way to get some goals,鈥 added Briere, a 21-year-old from Dryden, Ont. "We just executed and knew what we had to do.
"It was a hell of an experience.鈥
The Nanooks also beat the Warriors 6-4 in their matchup Saturday night.
Warriors forward Derek Klassen was the A Division's top scorer, while teammate William Sellars was named top goalie.
"Any little momentum, especially with a team like that, it's hard to stop something like that,鈥 said Johnstone, the Warriors captain. "Once they got snowballing there, maybe we just got a little bit slower. I don't know.
"This tournament's huge,鈥 the 44-year-old Whitehorse native added.
"You get goosebumps when it's time to go to your first game. Everyone comes from everywhere, so it's really an honour to play.鈥
