Musher Normand Casavant is the first major winner as 2014 Yukon Quest festivities get underway.
Casavant's name was drawn Friday to receive $1,300 back from his $2,000 race entry fee. All mushers who signed up on the official race sign-up day Aug. 3 were eligible for the first incentive draw.
Casavant was one of 13 mushers to register for the 31st annual 1,000-mile international sled dog race.
The 50-year-old was the first Yukon musher to cross the finish line last year, in seventh place. It marked his top finish in his three years participating in the race.
The Quest's second incentive draw will be held Sept. 6 for all mushers who have signed up as of Aug. 31. That prize will be a custom parka courtesy of Apocalypse Design.
Next year's Yukon Quest begins Feb. 1 in Fairbanks.
The early deadline for registration closes Dec. 6, while Jan. 3 marks the final deadline.
The Quest accepts a maximum number of 50 teams. Last year, 26 mushers competed.
