Marsh Lake community ready for another loppet

Marsh Lake has cross country fever.

Marsh Lake has cross country fever.

The community if busy getting ready for one of our biggest events of the year: The Marsh Lake Classic Cross-Country Ski Loppet.

鈥淭his is our 21st anniversary!鈥 says John Streicker, this year鈥檚 chief of race. 鈥淟ast year the Marsh Lake Loppet was modified to a shortened 鈥榝un ski鈥 because the sudden warming and then drop in temperatures caused the trails to be too icy for skiers. This year we are doubling up on fun and good times.鈥

The race is considered a favourite of Yukon skiers both for the excellent trails and for the hospitality of the community.

It caters especially to families and the recreational skier but also attracts Yukon鈥檚 best competitors.

The race is dedicated to the late Peter Milner, and every year we designate a Peter Milner Captain Fun award for best spirit. We encourage people to dress up in costume - the ski鈥檚 the limit at this year鈥檚 race.

鈥淭his year鈥檚 event promises to be extra special because it falls on Valentine鈥檚 day. I can鈥檛 think of a better way to spend a day with your sweetheart than on the ski trails.鈥漵ays Reanna Mohamed, interim manager of the community Centre.

鈥淪o many people help out with the race and a lot of the volunteers and skiers get dressed up. It鈥檚 such an exciting day just full of good energy.鈥

Every year the Loppet has loads of people volunteering and baking goodies for race day. Such a successful event wouldn鈥檛 happen without the amount of people that come to help out both before and during the race.

In addition to the volunteers, thanks goes to the generous sponsors who donate both financially and towards some amazing draw prizes.

The 21st Annual Marsh Lake Classic Cross Country Ski Loppet takes place Saturday at the Marsh Lake Community Centre located at 80 Doehle Drive, Judas Creek.

Registration forms are available at Coast Mountain Sports, Icycle Sports and at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club at Mt Mac. They are also available at the community centre in Marsh Lake. Deadline to register is on Wednesday.
