A Carcross couple is chasing an adventure racing world title in Australia this weekend.
Denise and Greg McHale are part of Team鈥圱ecnu, which also includes Alex Provost and Benjamin Midena.
The adventure racing team won their world championship free entry earlier in July at the Rev3 Cameco Cowboy Tough Adventure Race in Wyoming.
The world championship course, which is near the coast in New South Wales, has been kept secret. Five hours before the race started on Nov.10 at 12:30 p.m., the maps were released to the teams, who were able to examine them during a five-hour lockdown.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a beautiful area,鈥 said Greg in a video posted to the team鈥檚 official Facebook page the night before the race. 鈥淲e really don鈥檛 know much more than what we see at the beach so far and what we do see of the bush ... it looks pretty thick so it could be interesting bushwhacking.鈥
The McHales arrived in鈥圓ustralia about a week early to get ready for the race.
Denise said she鈥檚 ready to get out on the course.
鈥淚鈥檓 excited to see what鈥檚 out there,鈥 she said in the same video.
According to the event鈥檚 website, the Adventure Racing World Championships will take teams from more than 30 countries across about 600 kilometres through Shoalhaven in NSW.鈥圱he winning team is expected to finish in four-and-a-half days.
The course will have no early cut-offs or early short courses. 鈥淭here will be no mandatory stops and no optional controls 鈥 pure adventure racing at its best,鈥 according to the website鈥檚 course details description.
The McHales came out of semi-retirement this year to chase a world title. 鈥淚t just feels like some unfinished business and a desire to suffer some more,鈥 Denise told the Star in January. 鈥淚t all seemed to fall into place at a really good time for us. We鈥檝e always wanted to go back to a world championship and be on the podium. That鈥檚 kind of the driving force. That鈥檚 the big goal.鈥
