Halfway through pool play at the 2017 Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Victoria, Team Meger is still looking for its first win.

Led by 16-year-old skip Alyssa Meger, the team, including third, Emily Matthews, second, Peyton L鈥橦enaff and lead, Zaria Netro is competing at their second nationals.

They automatically qualified in December as Yukon鈥檚 representative when they were the only junior girls team to sign up for the territorial championships.

鈥淲e weren鈥檛 really surprised because we knew we were probably going to be the only team that applied for it,鈥 Meger told the Star in December.

She said the team would try to improve on last year鈥檚 result.

鈥淚 think we mainly just expect to win a few games, try to win one more than last year.鈥

The team is playing in pool B, which includes Ontario, New Brunswick, British Columbia, Quebec, Northern Ontario and Nunavut.

Team Meger was dealt their first loss of the tournament Saturday when they faced New Brunswick.

Samantha Crook鈥檚 team defeated the Yukoners 10-4.

Team Meger conceded its next two games 13-2 against Camille Boisvert鈥檚 Quebec rink after eight ends and Krysta Burns鈥 Northern Ontario team 15-4, also after eight ends.

This afternoon the two pool B teams who have yet to land in the win column will face each other.

Team Meger and Nunavut鈥檚 Sadie Pinksen rink (0-3) play at 1:30 p.m.

Team Meger鈥檚 next games will be against B.C.鈥檚 Brown rink (2-1) at 9 a.m. Tuesday and their final pool game is scheduled against Ontario鈥檚 Hailey Armstrong (3-0).

Team Meger will have to win at least two of their next games if they want to improve on last year鈥檚 result.

They were 13th at the 2016 national championships, winning one of six pool games.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot harder than what we usually play, just because we don鈥檛 have a lot of competitive teams here,鈥 Meger told the Star in December.

There is no Yukon team competing in the junior men鈥檚 tournament.
