The Midget A Mustangs picked up their first out-of-town win for the season last weekend at the Abbotsford Midget Memorial Tournament.

While the club finished with an overall record of 1-3, head coach Barry Blisner said his team showed plenty of improvement since their last tournament 鈥 an 0-4 penalty-filled showing in Richmond last month.

"We got a win out of it, so that's certainly a start,鈥濃圔lisner told the Star. "When you're not used to winning, you can get deflated a little bit. They still played hard and tough, but also with some class.鈥

The Mustangs opened tournament play with a 10-1 loss to the Winfield Bruins Saturday. Levi Johnson scored the only goal for Whitehorse, while Brett Skookum and Devon Troke split the game between the pipes.

The young club would drop their second game Sunday, this time 6-1 to the Richmond Blues with Chance Goodman the lone local scorer.

But things came together for their third game, when the Mustangs' offence came out flying against the Vancouver Spirit. Malachi Lavallee, Sam Logan, Bodhi Elias, Jarrett Peterson, Ryan MacDonald and Kadin Kormandy each scored, while Troke provided some key saves in a 6-3 win.

The joy would be short-lived, however, as the Mustangs would drop their final game of the tournament 8-2 to the Vernon Vipers Monday. Johnson and Elias were the goalscorers in that game.

Early goals against cost the club in each of their losses, Blisner said.

"You've just got to keep practising and striving to get better,鈥 17-year-old defenceman Kaleb Millwater said regarding his team's early-season troubles.

"The games that we lose teach us something that we did wrong that game. We need to go to practice, keep working on those issues, and try to get better.鈥

He said the club is learning some life lessons this season, including how to shake off losses and treat each game as a fresh slate.

The Mustangs attended the Tier 3 tournament without two 麻豆社区players, power forward Nick Dobush and goaltender Josh Tetlichi, who are out with injuries.

Last night, the Mustangs' rec league game versus Roadhouse was postponed as the league sorts out insurance issues.
