Yukon Soccer Association president Johnny Nunan called it the biggest sporting event of the year.

Communities with soccer programs sent teams to compete at the Yukon Championships last weekend with games held at the Canada Games Centre, Yukon College and Vanier Catholic Secondary School.

In total, 50 teams competed for titles in U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15 divisions.

"We had just over 500 kids that participated, which translates probably to about 1,000 parents and grandparents as far as spectators,鈥� Nunan said. "It's the biggest sporting event in the Yukon.鈥�

In the U-15 championship final, Sportslife edged Eagle Construction 3-2 to win gold, while Builders Supplyland topped Austring Fendrick Fairman 7-6 in the bronze medal game.

Klondike Business Solutions took the U-13 championship, beating Electrical Shop 8-5 in the gold medal game. The Whitehorse Star won bronze with a 4-2 win over Auto Spa.

The most teams participated in U-11 action 鈥� 14 teams. In the U-11 final, the Haines Junction Eagles soared over Locksmith Services 10-2 to win gold, while Intersport topped Robert Service Campground 9-1 to take bronze.

Energy North shut out the Yukon 麻豆社区 in the U-9 gold medal final, and Sale Salvage edged The Deli 5-4 in the bronze medal game.

Finally in U-7 action, the Elks topped Bocelli Pizza 4-3 in extra time to clinch the championship. In the bronze medal match, ERS shut out Tim Hortons 4-0.

With the tournament marking the end of the indoor soccer season, registration has begun for the outdoor summer season. Nunan said player numbers continue to remain steady.

"We would obviously like more participation from more of the communities,鈥� he said. "But our numbers have been pretty stable.鈥�

In the future, Nunan is looking to get soccer programs underway in Carcross, Ross River and Old Crow.

"You might see Old Crow in next year,鈥� Nunan said.

This summer, the Yukon is aiming to send two U-16 Striker teams to the Canada Summer Games.
