Minor soccer teams clash at Toonie Tournament
Whitehorse Minor Soccer (WMS) teams took over the Canada Games Centre and Yukon College gymnasium to battle for Toonie Tournament titles last weekend.
Whitehorse Minor Soccer (WMS) teams took over the Canada Games Centre and Yukon College gymnasium to battle for Toonie Tournament titles last weekend.
Teams clashed in three age group divisions, with the finals playing out Saturday afternoon.
While scores from the championship contests were not reported, the big winners were the U11 Haines Junction Eagles, the U9 Subvert.ca Shredders, and U7 Team Dark Blue.
Haines Junction beat out Creative Works Psychological Services for gold in the 10-team U11 division, while It鈥檚 Lunch Time! earned a hard-fought bronze over Team Lime Green.
The Subvert.ca Shredders downed the Team Lime Green to win the 13-team U9 division, while Tim Hortons earned bronze over Team White.
In U7 action, Team Dark Blue downed Team Purple for gold in the 10-team category, while Team Light Blue took down the Whitehorse Firefighters in the third-place game.
The annual Toonie Tournament, held Friday night and Saturday, is one of the fun recreational tournaments the organization hosts, said WMS president Grant Zazula.
鈥淧art of the idea is to help raise money and donations for the food bank,鈥� Zazula said.
The amount raised was unavailable as of press time today.

In U13 soccer action yesterday, Alpine Aviation crushed the Eagles 5-4 thanks to a four-goal performance by Jake Charlton and a single from Jenika Lindley.

Alongside the game action, several large boxes of food donations were collected for the food bank.
