Mt. Lorne Mis-Adventure race a success

Imagine, a trail race where bears are the main spectators.

Imagine, a trail race where bears are the main spectators.

That's the unspoken word behind the Mount Lorne Mis-Adventure 21-kilometre cross country run.

The 10th running of this perennial favourite took place Sunday morning under perfect running conditions.

It featured 32 runners enjoying clear skies and a +17 temperature at the 10 a.m. start time.

The brainchild of Sue MacKinnon and Bill Dunn, this year's event raised $800 for Mount Lorne's volunteer fire fighting brigade.

The route is full of challenges including a wicked uphill at the five-km mark, the possibility of going off course in a number of spots and a boggy area where wet, mucky shoes are inevitable.

Still, the friendly atmosphere, the easy going charm of the race volunteers, the stunning scenery and the great food have brought runners back year after year since 2003.

Derek Gibson, of Tennessee, set a new course record with a blistering time of 1:18:42.

Second place finisher David Eikelboom (1:20:35) was just 2 minutes behind Gibson in a time that was not far off the former record (1:19:52) set by Dan Shier at the inaugural event in 2003.

Well back of the frontrunners was masters runner Tom Ullyett (1:33:28), long-time Yukon runner Jean-Francois Roldan (1:40:19) and the ever modest Terry Boone (1:48:47).

In the women's category, this summer's "it" girl of the Whitehorse running scene, Lauren Whyte, did it again.

Whyte crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 1:38:16.

She was just three seconds ahead of a gifted trail runner from Alaska named Erin Latoswo (1:38:19).

Like the men's category, the other female runners in the top five were well back of the front pack.

Kelsey Bragg (1:51:38) and Megan Phillips (1:58:11) ran hard to the very end finishing under the two hour mark. Multisport masters athlete Andrea Buckley (2:02:20) finished in fifth spot.
