CELEBRATING 25 YEARS 鈥 In this 2016 file photo, cyclists compete in the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay between Haines Junction and Haines, Alaska. This year, the race celebrates 25 years.
For the first time in its 25-year history, the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay filled up in 36 hours.
For the first time in its 25-year history, the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay filled up in 36 hours.
鈥淟ast year it filled up in 10 days and that blew us away,鈥 said race coordinator Mike Kramer.
This year, the event hit its 1,200 rider capacity in 36 hours, which was 鈥減henomenally fast,鈥 said Kramer.
There are still some solo spots for cyclists who want to tackle the 238.3 kilometre course between Haines Junction and Haines, Alaska by themselves.
There are a few special qualities to this year鈥檚 race, which is scheduled for June 17, though Kramer said it鈥檚 鈥渟till the same road; still the same checkpoints.鈥
The start will be punctuated by a cannon blast.
鈥淗e鈥檚 assured me there鈥檚 not going to be any broken windows,鈥 said Kramer of the operator.
There is also a special bike jersey and t-shirt designed by First Nation artist Mark Preston for participants.
The Yukon River Trail Marathon, which had its registration open on April 1, also filled up in record time.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a well-known and loved race in town,鈥 said race committee president Jody Eikelboom. 鈥淧eople just kind of know that if they want to do the race, they have to sign up early.鈥
She said the race, which takes place on July 30, was full in two weeks.
The race does allow participants to transfer their registration to another person and the race鈥檚 Facebook page is already active with requests.
Eikelboom said they鈥檙e not looking to make any major changes to the race and are always on the lookout for volunteers to help make the event possible.
This year, volunteer perks include some swag from one of the sponsors, Winterlong Brewing Co.
Interested parties can email volunteer.yukonmarathon@gmail.com and Eikelboom, who is also the volunteer coordinator, will find a position that works best for you.
