The Whitehorse Female Mustangs will provide the closing act to a marathon women鈥檚 hockey weekend being held across the country.

On Saturday, the girls will square off at the Canada Games Centre with a select team from the Whitehorse Women鈥檚 Hockey Association at 7 p.m. 鈥� the final game on the schedule.

Organized by Hockey Canada, The Long Game will feature more than 2,000 players on 98 teams playing 49 games across Canada, which will run continuously.

The first puck drop will take place in Stephenville, Nfld., with the final contest taking place in Whitehorse.

鈥淚t鈥檚 fantastic to watch how many Canadians support the events and support the continued growth of the women鈥檚 game,鈥� said Joanne Hughes, chair of Hockey Canada鈥檚 female council.

鈥淲orld Girls鈥� Hockey Weekend is truly a nationwide event, not just with The Long Game, but with so many other development activities.鈥�

Meanwhile, Mustangs captain Chyanne Spenner and winger Maddie Nicholson returned to action in Whitehorse last night after starring with the Terrace Kermode Female Midget team at a Tier 1 tournament in Kelowna last weekend.

Spenner, 16, and Nicholson, 13, are alternate players for the B.C. club, and both earned game MVP鈥坔onours en route to a second place finish.

鈥淚t was really good hockey,鈥� said Spenner, who played centre. 鈥淔aster than I鈥檝e ever played.鈥�

Added Nicholson: 鈥淚t was a really good experience. All the girls were really nice.鈥�

Terrace coach Kevin Kennedy was impressed with the play of the hard-working Yukoners.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e two pretty talented players,鈥� he told the Star. 鈥淢addie Nicholson is a very versatile player. We asked her to play defence and forward ... she just played exceptionally well. She鈥檚 a terrific hockey player for her age.鈥�

Meanwhile, Spenner showed her skills by sniping a couple of key goals against Salmon Arm, while also playing well defensively.

鈥淪he didn鈥檛 lose a faceoff the entire weekend, I don鈥檛 think,鈥� said Kennedy.
