The Pepsi Softball Centre was abuzz with action as three divisions held their opening tournaments. Action was fierce, but by early Sunday afternoon, three new winners had been crowned.
Division 2
The comeback seemed inevitable for Dave's Cleaning Crew, down by just one run to Coke with runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With just one out and slugger James Semaschuk at the plate, the win seemed within reach. Semaschuk 鈥 who had already hit two homeruns in the game 鈥 would fly out deep to the outfield on a pitch from Bud Arnold, but a bad base-running decision prevented Dave's Cleaning from tying the game.
Coke would go on to take the game 8-7.
"It was a pretty close game throughout,鈥 said Coke third baseman Meghan
Stonehouse. "It was kind of back and forth.鈥
Stonehouse said her club has proved to be a "good tournament team,鈥 but has had an up-and-down start to the regular season.
Coke lost their Saturday morning game to third-place winner Mister DJ, but battled back to earn a berth in the final game.
Division 4A
The Kubota Hoes dominated from start to finish in a 28-15 blowout over the ALS Minerals Crushers.
The Hoes beat the third-place Adult Temptations Shockers in a game early Sunday morning to earn their place in the championship game.
"I really think it was an advantage for us to play our first game this morning,鈥 Hoes player-coach Bryan Levia said post-final. "It got us loose. We were ready to play and had our heads in the game.鈥
Levia said his team is a talented, but fun group of players.
"Our girls are so talented,鈥 Levia said. "We've got a few new young girls on the team this year, and it's really been a benefit. We can beat these guys anytime when we're playing our game, and we found it, so that worked.鈥
While the team racked up the runs, Levia said one player stood out among the rest 鈥 his longtime teammate Robyn Lawson.
Crushers captain Kevin Holway-Keyes said his team is new to league play this year.
"It surprised me we were even here,鈥 he told the Star. "This is a brand new team that just meshed together.鈥
The Crushers had beaten the Hoes 17-10 on Saturday, but Sunday's final was put out of reach when Kubota scored 10 runs in the third inning.
Division 4B
This final was also a blowout with the Riverdale Super A D-Backs downing the Where my Pitches at? Ballers 21-7.
Tristan Olynyk, Jamie Tetlichi and Jarret Malchow all had three RBI in the win.
The game score was a reversal in fortunes between the two clubs, as the Ballers had beaten the D-Backs 16-14 in extra innings Saturday night. A lack of female players forced the D-Backs to take an auto-out each time that two men batted back to back.
They had the full contingent back on Sunday however, and that helped turn the tide.
"We expected to be here (in the final),鈥 said D-Backs pitcher Matt McCarthy. "We've been doing pretty well all year.鈥
Ballers captain Jesse Walchuk said the difference in the final was purely hitting.
"They were consistent and they were hitting smart,鈥 he said. "They weren't hitting for the fences. They were putting it through the holes. We fell behind in the first couple innings, and then trying to play catch-up against these guys was pretty impossible to do.鈥
The D'Backs beat the third-place Zombies Sunday morning to make the final.
