The second mushing event of the summer took place on Sunday.

A small group of racers took part in the Hot Hounds dryland series race, held at Stardog Kennel on the Annie Lake Road.

The weather co-operated and it turned out to be an excellent day to race some dogs.

Mushers competed in all three of the usual categories – the two-mile, two-dog bikejor, the one-mile, one-dog bikejor, and the one-mile canicross.

The Stardog trails are known as fast and technical, with small rolling hills and plenty of tree roots to navigate.

Newcomer Julian Rouget snapped up victory in the two-mile race, beating the hosts, Darryl and Katherine Sheepway, with a time of eight minutes, 55 seconds.

Meanwhile, five teams entered the one-mile, one-dog event, and this race saw a repeat victor.

Darryl Sheepway and his dog, Grizzly, finished the trail in four minutes, 27 seconds – his second straight win.

The canicross event also saw a repeat winner, as Virginia Sarrazin beat out three other competitors to win in six minutes, 10 seconds.

The event wrapped up with an awards ceremony and barbecue, where all of the participants were able to get their fill of burgers, sausage, salad, melon, and some fresh-caught lake trout, courtesy of Colin and Simi Morrison.

Races are put on by the Dog Powered Sports Association of Yukon.
