The Northern Novas synchronized swim team displayed their skills in front of a panel of judges and other supporters Sunday at the Canada Games Centre.

"I think it went well,鈥 club president Shannon Duke told the Star. "It was a great meet. A lot of our younger athletes came out of their shell this weekend.鈥

Jamie Duke placed first in the junior figures category, ahead of Katelyn Vowk. The two will travel to Lethbridge, Alta., next month to compete in a provincial competition before heading to nationals in Saskatoon at the beginning of May.

"That's exciting that we have a team going to nationals,鈥 Shannon Duke admitted. The duo continues to work towards their goal of competing at next year's Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.

Teera Walsh and Samantha Steele finished one and two in the recreational 16-and-under figures event, while Taylor Jobin and Indiana Pumphry took the top two spots in the pre-competitive 12-and-under figures.

Meanwhile, in the recreational Rec 1 and 2 figures, Cambria Alford took first place, ahead of Aryanna Lavanderos and Kaydia Campbell.

Duke said the pre-competitive athletes showed much improvement in the performance of their routines.

Walsh, Jobin and Pumphry "have really accelerated in their synchronized swimming skills this year,鈥 she added.

The weekend was also a training opportunity for coaches and judges as new rules and guidelines for competition came into effect this year.

"All of the girls were doing new figures this year ... and did really well with them, considering that,鈥濃圖uke said.

For the last three years, the Novas have had about a dozen athletes competing in the Whitehorse pool.

Proud parent Kristina Rough watched her eight-year-old daughter Hailey compete in the territory's synchro championships for the first time.

"There was quite a few people out to watch,鈥 Rough said of the championships. "A lot of them I'm sure were family and friends. It was a lot of fun.鈥

The atmosphere was rocking as swimmers completed routines to songs like "I Want Candy.鈥
