A turn in the weather has helped boost local orienteering numbers.

Sixty teams competed in a course at Long Lake last Wednesday in an evening event that doubled as a junior orienteering fund-raiser for local orienteers who will be traveling outside the Yukon to compete in events later this summer.

Trevor Bray, Kendra Murray and Jennifer MacKeigan will attend the Junior World Orienteering Championships in the Czech Republic beginning June 30.

Bray said close to $500 was raised at the event through meet fees and a barbecue.

Teams participated in four categories – novice (2.3 km), intermediate (2.9 km), advanced (4.2 km) and expert (5.6 km).

Meanwhile, almost 90 participants attended a meet at Hidden Lakes May 15.

The event was the first real chance for orienteers to stretch their legs at a meet in the forest this year.

The first meet of May had to be re-located to downtown Whitehorse because of lingering snow, but not this time.
