START YOUR WATCHES鈥 Runners start their watches as the Claim Pre-Skagway 10-Miler begins at Rotary Peace Park last Sunday.
Lindsay Carson is learning that time spent away from running can be just as important as training.
Lindsay Carson is learning that time spent away from running can be just as important as training.
The 27-year-old runner spent last week in the field near Destruction Bay 鈥渓iving off Mr. Noodles,鈥 and posted a personal best time at the Claim Pre-Skagway 10-Miler last Sunday.
鈥淚t warrants me to think I鈥檓 probably overtraining,鈥 she said earlier this week. 鈥淎 forced break is really good for my running.鈥
Her sub one-hour time surprised her after not training for a week, but it was her goal this year, after going 1:01.17 at 2015鈥檚 race.
Using a Garmin watch, she paced herself on the road-dominated course.
Starting at Rotary Peace Park, the field of 28 runners embraced cooler conditions as they set out. Top positions were quickly established, with David Eikelboom taking the lead, followed by Carson and Dominic Bradford and Brendan Morphet.
鈥淭he temperature was awesome. You weren鈥檛 at risk of over-heating today, but it wasn鈥檛 last year where it was three degrees and shivering,鈥 said Eikelboom. 鈥淥nce you were through the first hundred metres and warmed-up, it felt great.鈥
But the feeling didn鈥檛 last long. After the first few miles, the athletes reached the first of a series of long, punishing hills on the Miles Canyon Road.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e hard, because the first three miles of this course are flat, like pancake flat, so you鈥檙e feeling good and you hit your rhythm then hit probably the steepest hill in all of Whitehorse going into Miles Canyon,鈥 said Eikelboom. 鈥淵ou just have to change gears and not red-line yourself on the first hill, because if you do, you鈥檙e going to suffer for the rest of the race.鈥
Eikelboom finished second last year behind Logan Roots, (who didn鈥檛 race this year) was aiming for a sub-56-minute time. He finished in 54:56.
鈥淚 was really happy to do that and to just practice my pacing a little bit,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 not very good at that (pacing). I like to go out way too fast.鈥
Carson and Bradford worked together on the steep part of the course leading into Miles Canyon.
鈥淲e definitely kept each other honest on those hills,鈥 she said.
She and Morphet, then took turns cutting the wind on the return along Chadburn Lake Road and through Riverdale.
鈥淪he has a strong kick, so I tried to distance myself, but there was no distance,鈥 said Morphet. 鈥淲e were pace for pace the entire way. It was nice because she pushed me and I pushed her.鈥
Their racing worked as they both made their goal of going under one hour.
Morphet ultimately crossed the line in 59:33, while Carson was 10 seconds back.
Morphet smiled as he approached the line, seeing he was under an hour.
鈥淚鈥檝e seen the times from the last few years and I said, 鈥業鈥檓 just going to go out today and run my own race and try to be less than an hour,鈥 and I did,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hanks to Lindsay pushing me, we were both able to go under an hour.鈥
Carson and Eikelboom will race on the same 10-leg mixed team at next weekend鈥檚 Klondike Road Relay, while Morphet may race his first on another team.
鈥淚t鈥檚 kind of a fun tune-up race for the relay for us,鈥 said Eikelboom, who said he expects his team to be competitive at the relay.
The Klondike Road Relay takes place Sept. 9-10, starting in Skagway.
